Katherine & Matt / Bridgeport, Valencia / Sun Valley, California
This is going to be a long one…
Valencia, Sun Valley, Grace Community Church, and Katherine B.. These are all words that are most familiar to me. Some from childhood, some from my teenage years, from college, to adulthood. This wedding brought back scores of memories that made it an enormous delight to capture in timeless memory.
Katherine was one of my “high school girls” (along with a number of her bridesmaids). When I worked at Grace Community Church as a high school ministry staff member, Katherine was the first girl I met in the small group that was assigned to me. She was fourteen years old :).
Katherine was one of my ten girls who was always — ALWAYS willing to meet me for lunch in between my class periods at college, who went out to coffee with me at Starbucks, who went to Venture beach for twelve hours to learn how to study the Bible, and learn to rely on God as a Christian teenager. I have so many wonderful memories of this dear woman.
SO! On this special day, to watch her family come around her in proud affirmation, and to watch a God-driven, humble man graciously and longingly take her as his bride… AH! It was an enormous delight to me. I teared up watching her mother’s adoring eyes as she got her makeup done, I teared up when she displayed herself in her wedding dress, when she anxiously rushed across the street to meet her groom for the first time, when she kissed her groom-to-be with a starbuck cup in her hand that read “Bride”. I could barely look through my camera viewfinder when she walked down the aisle, and stood in astonishment and respect as she affirmed to the pastor that she was ready to leave her father and mother, cling to her husband, and gladly take her role as wife under the grace of God’s mercy.
This ceremony was unique to me as a photographer. At most of the weddings I that I photograph, I find it natural and easy to move about the service and take tons of photos of every minute that passes. This was different. The pastor gave such a biblical, rich, and authoritative call to Matt and Katherine that the room sat silent, reverant, and motionless. There was such sanctity to the words of truth that were being admonished to this couple, that I actually felt sheepish moving about and clicking my shutter button! But I believe this to be a GOOD reaction to a Christian ceremony! I wanted to sit under the powerful message of the gospel-in-marriage with the rest of the witnesses! This is what was center-stage. No picture can capture the glory of God’s goodness by displaying His mercy through the union of two individuals in a pure marriage. There are few things that fire me up as much as capturing beauty; God’s grace is at the top.
So (I told you it would be a long one!), I was moved and affected by this wedding. I was brought back to my younger-youth, I was brought back to old friends, I was brought back to the cross of Jesus, I was brought back to my own wedding day. So for many of you, my blog-visitors, this will perhaps find this particular post unrelatable. I am reminicing. You know how it is :). Both others of you — Grace Community Church friends! — will be able to remember with me your own youth, your own ministry experiences, as well as your own experience with God’s goodness in your life. I hope you do, and that the images below bring you to a new exitement in thankfulness for the Love we are given in Christ.
Matt and Katherine — I have to thank you for having me be a part of your day. It was an absolute joy.
Cheers to you!
